EMW Team Member Profile: Laani Heinar
How long have you volunteered for EMW?
I'm happy to have started working with EMW in May.
What is your “day job”?
I am a professional illustrator and designer with a particular focus on editorial illustration and children's literature. Some of my recent work has been with CBC Arts and in Uppercase magazine. I've also been working on two ongoing children's book projects that I'm very excited about!
What is your background?
The arts have always been central in my life and became even more so when I enrolled in a visual arts focused program in high school. After this, I moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia to continue my education at NSCAD University. There, I studied everything from graphic design, to ceramics, to art history. In 2014, I graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a major in Textile & Fashion Design. Since, I have been studying and focusing on illustration and continuing to find my way along the sometimes bumpy but always exciting path of the arts.
What are you doing for EMW?
I have been creating social media content for EMW. Every week, I create an illustration and accompanying text of topics and news related to the upcoming festival and Estonian music. Follow along with us on facebook and instagram @estonianmusicweek
What excites you about your work?
I love the challenge of illustration. I try to create images that are both representational but also include elements of unexpected colour and texture that stylize the image. There is always something new to learn and discover in this field!
What do you like to do in your spare time?
Fashion and textile design has always captured my imagination and in my spare time, I love sewing and working with fabric. Sometimes that means making clothes from scratch, but more often, it's altering pre-loved clothing or for instance, right now, I'm learning how to do beading and embroidery.
